NIC card won't install

Please help me. My mom gave me her old HP Pavilion with Windows 98, I reformatted and now want to install a new network card (US Robotics), I have it in the PCI slot correctly, when I reboot it finds the card but when I put the disk in to install the driver it won't install, I've tried removing it from the device manager and rebooting and reinstalling with no luck. Please help - I'm at my wits end - I can't see any reason it shouldn't work.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Well unfortunately that didn't work either - I am so frustrated, I have tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any other ideas?....please?

Thanks so much!

If you've done a fresh install from format of W98, it may need chipset drivers as well.
Also, the pci slot you selected may be locking you in to sharing an IRQ which the NIC doesn't like. Try another Pci slot.
Are you sure you're using the correct driver for both OS & NIC model number?

When you look at the NIC card in the device manager is there any indication that it is indeed not working? It may be happy with the default windows drivers. Therefore all you are lacking is to use the internet connection wizard to get connected.

I tried the default drivers in windows as well, when I looked in device manager there was a red x, so I enabled the driver and still nothing. Believe it or not this is the only available pci slot in there, there was nothing else in there and the manual for the computer shows that this port is available to install something just as this. This is an older computer, probably 5 years old. I read something about ensuring the pci slot being enabled for master and not slave on the us robotics website, but I'm not that computer literate and have no idea how to get the bios to come up, although I have seen what it looks like and can probably manage my way though if I know how to get it to come up.

I really appreciate all the help everyone is giving me - I have to get this working for my daughter for school KellBell

Hi,

Try deleting all references to the device in device manager and then shutting down and moving the device to PCI #3 (third slot down from AGP slot) before you reboot. Whatever you have in PCI #3, change it to anther slot or exchange it with this device. That might eliminate a conflice that you have and just might work. If you have Win98, then make sure Pnp is Enabled, but if you have WinXP, make sure you have it Disabled in BIOS setup menu.

Thanks Mark - one quick question? How do I get the bios to come up? I know I have to do something at boot up, but not sure what?

I will be trying this when I get home from work tonight and let you know. Thanks again!

Holding down the delete key at boot should access bios.

To get into the bios if delete doesn't work:
Some HP's use F2 or F10 or F12. It might say at the bottom of the screen.

Something like Press F2 to enter setup.

When prompted for the driver, browse the disk and see if there is a win98, win95, or win9x directory. Make sure to point to that directory. Some USR/3 com installs may ask for a 2nd disk. You might try to go to 3 com and find the newest driver and make the disks for install. They usually have a diagnostic software that monitors the connection for you.

Ok - the bios is all ok - still nothing. Further research I found this on an old posting here at tech support forum:

the install wizard refuses to acknowedge the locations of the driver files. i solved this simply by copying every file on the floppy disk that came with it to a file on my hard disk, then when i install it, i tell it that the driver disk is at c:/ethernet and the windows cd is in the cd rom drive
Sounds like this person had the same problem as me and found the solution, however - how do I copy all the files from the cd to my drive? Can anyone tell me how I would do this - I'm hoping this will solve my problem.

Thanks so much!!
