Crashed Mercury KOB740CFDMx

I have the above system. My daughter took it to school and it crashed. I tried to repair XP and it didn't work. I reformatted and it wouldn't re-install XP. For some reason the CD Rom quit. I have tried the following:

2 different CD Drives,
3 different hard drives,
2 different CD Cables,
2 different operating systems.

I'm now focusing on trying to get W-98 installed. I reformatted and changed to Fat 32. I've tried 2 different W 98 Setup disks. I keep getting the CDR101: Not ready reading Drive E error.

My only idea is the mobo controller has failed. Is there anything else it could be. The system was new in 8/04

Check in BIOS for what letter is assigned to your CD, also I don't know what method or system you are trying when this happens but Windows sometimes bumps up your Drive Letter to the next one (e becomes f ) so try the next letter.
