computer stops at start up screen

I have windows me. my computer was acting kind of funny so i ran virus scanners , two different ones. No virus found. Then it would only start in safe mode. So i ran a system restore, it ran ok , and started normal a few times. Now ive tried to restart and it stops at the windows me start up screen. I put the win xp cd in, nothing happens. Still starts the same. no evidence of there being a cd in there. Yes I already had the bios to boot the cd first as i was already planning to upgrade. So i tried the Win me start up disk and nothing there either. I guess neither drive is working. It lets me into the bios, but it freezes on first page and i can do nothing. There has been no new software installed for awhile either. All i can think is maybe hardware. If anyone has any ideas id love to hear them. thanks

Re: computer stops at start up screen

I'd check temperatures, power supply, and memory. You should be able to check temps in BIOS (if you can get that far). Easiest way to check power supply is with a tester (about $15) or swap out for a known good one if you're comfortable with that. Check memory with memtest.

EDIT: If you're running one OS (Me) you can't just go tossing in the CD from another (XP) and expect things to go well

Perhaps you have already solved the problem. I see no messages since July. Did you manage to up grade? Do you still have the problem?
