trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

my w98SE pc (20gb disk, 13gb free, 128mb ram) is refusing to complete scandsk/defrag (even in selective startup mode via msconfig). gui version keeps rechecking files/folders without ever completing. the command prompt route stops partway - stops and says delete a file. don't know which file i need to delete. also tried using the ME version of defrag (apparently it ignores other background progs running) - no joy. h e l p !

Try it in safe mode. Tap f8 key prior to 98 loading, select safe.

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

If the above doesn't work, might want to try memtest. Tried to help a guy whose PC wouldn't finish scandisk, turned out one of this two memory sticks was failing.

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

Hi,
That problem is sometimes caused by a Hard Drive that is too full. That also may account for the error message you are getting. You should always have at least about 20 to 25 percent free space. Programs need space to breathe. Dump everything you don't need. Safe mode will sometimes work.

Good Luck, Jim

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

Thanks everyone for your responses.
Tried safe mode - no success - keeps reading folders repeatedly without completing.
Tried memtest - after > 2hrs of tests, i interrupted when it had competed 4 out of 10 tests (without errors) - should I have let it continue ?
On hdd space - currently there is 13 Gb of free space.
I am lost guys ....

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

It took 2 hours to complete 4 of the 10 tests? Sheez, that's pretty slow. I'd let it loop all night, though from my limited experience bad memory starts creating faults within the first ten or fifteen minutes so I'm guessing that's not your problem.

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

Thanks Geekgirl. Downloaded the utility, ran both the 'quick' and 'comprehensive' diagnostics and it reported back that the disk is perfectly healthy.

So, where you at on this? The HDD checks out OK but you're still with the original problem?

Hi again,

I just experienced the same problem last night. Drive had plenty of head room. It worked OK from Safe Mode.

Reran utility (return = healthy) followed by Scandisk/ Defrag - alas no improvement. So still left with the original problem.

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the “Temporary Files” and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Quote:
1.Set Windows to show all files. To do this, open Windows Explorer, and on the Tools menu, Click Folder Options.
2.Click the View tab, click Show all files for Windows 98 or Show hidden files and folders, Click Apply and then click OK.
3.Delete the Applog folder from C:\Windows, and then run the Disk Cleanup Tool.
The Disk Cleanup Tool provides an easy interface to remove temporary internet files, .tmp files, and other optional components. To start the Disk Cleanup Tool:

1.Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup.
2.Select the drive you wish to clean up, and then click OK.
3.The Disk Cleanup menu is displayed with the files that you need to delete are already selected. NOTE: If you wish to take this opportunity to remove other items that are not automatically selected you can do so. If you are not familiar with the Disk Cleanup Tool, you might want to remove the items at a later date. For additional information about the Disk Cleanup Tool, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
186099 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186099/EN-US/) Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows 98
After you have removed the Applog folder and the temporary files in the steps above, run ScanDisk and then run the Disk Deframenter again.

Re: trouble with scandisk/defrag - h e l p

good news!! heard a random comment on TV about a site called bootdisk.com
Decided to visited the site - downloaded boot disk for W98SE - booted off floppy and carried out a scandisk successfully (it said disk size is not being reported correctly, click on button to fix prob) - then rebooted pc normally - ran defrag and success!! a happy chappy I am at last. the defrag happened at a blistering pace, previously it was at a snail's pace (perhaps a clue for future reference). I now sleep with the floppy under my pillow.
Many thanks to everyone for advice/comments. TSF.com rules !!
