Reformating my computer or cleaning it out another way

Im looking to clean out my computer its and old compaq computer I am currently using until I get my notebook which wont be for awhile. This computer was my mothers I need to clean it out completely. I need my program on it which is the only reall reason I even need a computer. I cannot have my program on it cause there is not enough space and I have already went through the whole add and remove folder and removed almost every program the I wouldnt use anyway. Still leaves me with barely any room.

I was thinking of reformatting but I do not have an OS disc for anything to put in after removing windows 98. I was thinking about linux cause I cannot afford windows xp. Would like to do it this weekend. If anyone can give me any suggestions as to reformatting or just another way to compoletely clean out my computer without removing the OS. Thank you

hey...i don't know if you have used linux before...if u have then ignore this else i strongly do not suugest that you use linux cause it is totally different starting from file extensions to every possible thing....i myself have tried using Linux Suse and was just stuck not being able to do anything...plus it will be hard getting drivers for everything designed for linux...
