Re: display too large
Installing drivers can be a pain until you've done it a few times. Even then it can be a pain. Yesterday I was trying to get Windows to accept drivers for a US Robotics external modem. I kept sticking the Windows Driver Update process 's nose right in the file but it wouldn't take the download. Finally installed the drivers to a floppy, told Windows to look at the floppy for drivers, and it finally accepted them. Stupid Windows.
Anyway, I noticed that your download is in a zip file. Windows will not recognize the zipped drivers. First thing I'd try is make a new folder on your desktop. Call it "video" or whatever you want. Extract the contents of the download to that new file. I use 7-zip instead of Winzip anymore. If you don't have an unzipper just go online and download the latest 7-zip for Windows file and install it. OK, so you extract your driver download to a folder. Take a look at that folder. Is there a "readme" file or some sort of instructions in that file? If not, then you'll have to try the typical steps. There may even be an installer in that file, which would be the easiest way to go. I right-clicked "My Computer", found the device that was in yellow, clicked on that, clicked on "Properties", then found the "Update Driver" button. I don't remember the exact steps, but at some point Windows should ask where the file is. Try browsing to the folder you made. Another option - burn the entire unzipped folder to a CD. Then when you're in the "Update Driver" process, tell Windows you "Have Disk" and click on the CD-ROM button. The CD must be in the tray. There are several different ways to do this, and as I described above Windows can be downright balky about taking the drivers. But you should be able to do it. If you think it did take the update, turn off the PC and fire it back up. Then go to Settings, video, and see if you have options for display resolution. Also go back to Device Manager, go to video, see what it says under driver details. I described the above from memory, so it's not gonna be perfect. Hopefully close enuf to get you going. Good luck. Re: display too large
Install the chipset driver first. You can download it from VIA.
Reboot. Then unzip the display driver you downloaded earlier to a folder. Open Control panel > Add new hardware. Follow the wizard, Windows should find the display adapter. When Windows asks for the driver - browse to the folder where you unzipped the driver. |

Re: display too large
micxie -
Most average PC users don't understand drivers. Drivers are the interpreters between your software and your hardware. Picture this - your software speaks Swedish. Your motherboard speaks Swahili. Your video card only knows Italian. The sound card speaks Eskimo, the modem French, and the network chipset speaks Spanish. Put them all in a room (with the lights out) and you've got pandemonium. That's not the greatest analogy, but it gives you an idea of the situation inside your PC after you install the operating system fresh. Without drivers your operating system doesn't know what parts it's trying to talk to, and it doesn't know how to speak to them. Windows operating systems come with lots of drivers, and will try to query the parts and find the right drivers within its cab files, but this doesn't always work. And if your parts were built after Windows 98 was finalized, it's guaranteed that you will have to manually install the correct drivers. It's hard to tell you exactly how to do it, but suffice to say that the PC will work a lot smoother if you install the motherboard chipset, video, sound, modem, and network drivers from the appropriate websites. Grab someone who can help you if necessary because if you're not familiar with the process it's likely to be very confusing. |

Re: display too large
Thank You so much Bartender. So eloquently said, and i realize now that there is not much i can do to solve this problem, being my unknowlegeable understanding of computers. Without being led step by step on how to fix this problem. and not wanting to take up too much of your's and everyone else time , I admit to defeat. We can not afford to purchase another computer for her,and i was so much looking forward to being a Hero in the eyes of my grand daughter.
Thank's to everyone who replied to my plea of help. God bless you all Mike |

Re: display too large
Don't give up. We're going to get that driver installed.
Start with the chipset driver - did you download it from VIA? To unpack the file you need a program - try the evaluation version of WinZip. Please download those programs first - we will continue when that's done. |

Re: display too large
This sounds like it could be a setting within the Control Panel. Lets see if thats the problem.
Click Start > Control Panel. Once the new window opens, look around for Appearence and Themes or Display depending on which view you have the control panel in. Then, if you click Appearence and Themes look down the bottom for a Icon titled Display. Click this and wait for the settings window to open. Once this is open, you should see 5 tabs across the top. These are titled, Themes, Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearence, and settings. We are interested in the settings option. So click this and a new page should load in the window. Now, you should see something that looks like this. ![]() Look at the colors part. This should be set to Highest (32bit) for the full colors on your desktop. Now, also look at the screen resolution. If the icons are too big, and the display is large, this means you have a low resolution setting. It is best to move this up to something such as 1024x768 or whatever suits you best. It will allow you to test the resolution before you accept it by clicking Apply. If these are the right settings, click OK and exit out of all the windows. Hope this helps |

Re: display too large
Thank you once again Nicholas. You guys are great I downloaded the via and winzip successfully, and have them on CD Disc. My son and family are out doing chores. When they return i will try to install those drivers.I will get back to you with the results.
Carsey Thank you so much for your help also. I did as you suggested many times and all i get is 2 or 16 colors and i cain't move the slider. I don't see that particular screen as you show it. This is an emachine that had win xp in it we had a virus problem that could not be resolved so i erased the complete hard drive and installed win 98se. Win 98 installed properly but with this display problem. Thanks again Carsey. Mike |
