Cd/rw
I have a computer that has win 98 and i have a cd/rw drive installed, but windows tells me that it is just a cd-rom drive. I go into device manager and it has the name of the drive and i went to the manufacturer's website and upgraded the firmware but still no change. Also, when i put a cd/rw in the drive it says that the drive is not accessable. Can somebody help me fix this or does win 98 not support cd/rw?

Re: Cd/rw
Hi swordsman30457
If the CD-RW drive is a standard ATAPI IDE CD-RW, it should be able to use the built-in CD drivers in Windows. What is the make/model of the CDRW - and when was the last time it was in known-good working order? [the make/model will be on a sticker on the drive - or you can use a tool like Astra or Everest to detect it]. If the CD-RW is some other sort of optical drive (such as a SCSI, parallel port, or USB external, etc) --- let us know. . . . Gary

Re: Cd/rw
it's a Samsung CD-R/CD-RW SW-208B and i upgraded the firmware. I installed a cd maker on my computer and it still acts as a cd rom drive. The last time i know of it working is about a week ago and it worked perfectley.

Re: Cd/rw
Hi again
Do you have the option of removing the drive, and trying it in a different computer? If it works in another computer, that would show that the drive is in good condition. --- Then we'd need to find out what the problem is when inside your Win98 box. . . . Gary ( I'm a little tired tonight, so this is brief)

Re: Cd/rw
Yeah it works because I pulled it out of a computer runnng win ME and it worked fine i burned several cds with it. Win 98 recognizes it but it says it is just a cd-ROM not a cd/rw drive. Do I need to find another driver or what

Re: Cd/rw
Hi again
As far as I can see, there's only one firmware available for that model. Try using the one in the following link (it's direct from Samsung), and see if it helps --- http://www.samsung.com/support/produ...e=FM&language= It's possible that the drive isn't supported by the software you are using. Try visiting the website of your recording software & seeing if an update is available (such updates usually add lists of drives & improve compatibility). I don't remember if Windows 98 had any updates necessary to provide Cd recording support - but just in case, why not visit Windows Update & grab all the patches you can [they are all still available, it's just that they stopped providing new patches after mid-2006]. See how it turns out. . . . Gary

Re: Cd/rw
Hi, Windows has the CD reader driver for any CD Reader or Burner. You will have to load the burner software to get it to burn CDs. Roxio/Adaptec, Nero etc. will work and there are many more available.
Good Luck, Jim |
