Confused Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Ok, I have been on here a few times before and had great help from Old Gray Gary.Wonderful help:)

But now I want to upgrade to XP home addition upgrade and I have a couple of questions about it.

I will catch you up on what I have done so far:
OS Windows ME
HP Pavillion xt 858
Original Motherboard
2 Memory Cards=512 MB
I have a seperate Exstasy Program and a seperate Sound Blaster Program.
No printer hooked up to this computer
No speakers hooked up either.

I tried to install windows xp home edition (Upgrade) last time and had a problem with a black screen stating that it was an invalid disk error, or something to that affect.
I downloaded an ISO program.
Also downloaded the UBCD program and ran memory tests and also ran the hard drive tests. I remember that one of them kept going and going, and I was instructed that sometimes they do that, so I just tried something out myself while waiting to see what to do next.
I took out both of the ram sticks, and put only one of them back in. I put in the HP Recovery Disc 1 and it started up and it installed ME back on the system. I also put the other ram stick in , and it didn't have a problem with it.
Next, after I got it up and running again, I went online and downloaded an antivirus, then went to windows update and downloaded every update there was for ME. I am told at this time that all of the updates are done and there are no more left to download.
I have gone through the computer and made sure that there wasn't anything that I was gonna loose when I upgraded, and was going to burn the C drive to a CD.
I went to a site that said, that sometimes when you have problems with installing xp, there isn't a cd rom driver in the xp program?? )Something to that affect). So , they said to go and find the cd rom driver, and the xp update KB835935 (Which is sp2 update) and put it with the xp program. It said to make a folder and put the copy of xp program, cd rom driver and sp2 in there so that it would be all on the same cd and therefore there will be less of a problem when installing.
Now, they said to go to the view tab in windows explorer, and click on the show all files and hidden folders. I did that and found the one that they were looking for..... msdownld.tmp. I found it on this computer and there was nothing in it because this isn't the computer that has the sp2 update on it. But on my other computer, there was nothing in there either. So I am unsure where to find it at all.
The second thing was to find the cd rom driver. Not sure how to do that one either.
Then I copied the xp upgrade program on the other computer and copied it to a folder on my c drive. Then it showed how to slipstream it and when I tried to do that, I went to start, run, CMD. That worked, then I was to type .. C. When I did that, it was suppose to go to the next step and look like ... C:\. But that didn't happen. I tried it a few times, and nothing worked. So I wasn't sure if there was something that I needed to do before it would work correctly.

So that is where I am at, and hope it wasn't too long and drawn out, but I want to get this computer updated.

P.S. How do I get to the bios screen on HP? Or does anyone have any site that I can go to , to get those commands?

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Hi,

First With BIOS to open with HP it can be either the DEL, F10,F1,ESC buttons one of them.

With going from Windows ME to Windows XP (Any Version), The File formats are different, ME use FAT32 And XP Uses NTFS, What you need to do is go into BIOS or enter Boot Loader when your computer first starts and start your computer from disk. (Making sure that the Windows XP disk is in you Cd drive).

When booting up you will see a messege saying "Press any key to boot from cd" Press any key. Then after the disk has finished loading you will direct your self to install windows, It will find that windows Me is on your system then i would delete the partition and install Windows XP from there. Your shouldnt have any problems, the windows setup will tell you what to do. So i would read it.

If you still have problems just ask and The TSF team and memeber will be happy to help you.

Have a nice day,

Jay.

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

G'Day Conbon,

Before you go taking any of "Jaymie1989's" advice, you have alot of preparation to do by the sound of it.

"Jaymie1989's" suggestions are along way down the track.

Quote:
I downloaded an ISO program.
Firstly, could you please also tell us what this .ISO program is, and from where you downloaded it?
Next, how big is the Hard Drive in your computer?

Then, we will need to know if you want this XP upgrade to be a dual boot or not?

I suggest that you go here first, and read the information from Hp™ regarding your model computer and how to upgrade to Windows® XP.

Once you have read the information from Hp™; acquainted yourself with the minimum requirements for your computer; you will need to evaluate whether your machine needs to have any components upgraded before you start this venture.

Please post back with the answers to the questions, and the results of your evaluation; then, we will be able to start to get you organised set-by-step to successfully upgrade your computer.

Kind Regards,

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Hi All, XP can use Fat32. You will be asked by the install if you want to reformat to NTFS or stay with Fat32.

Luck to all, Jim

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Hi, I have gone to the website and have viewed it.
I do have the adabtec software and know that it will not work with the xp installation.

I did make a mistake on the ramm that i had available. I have 255 not 512.

The specs on this computer are:
60 GB hard drive
Bios Cognac 3-GA
Ram (Standard) 192 MB PC100
Chipset Intel 819E
Motherboard Manufacturer- Trigem
Processor- Intel Pentium 3- 1 Gig
Model Number P2972A

I downloaded the Ultra ISO. Used it one time and extracted the UBCD. I am not sure how that happened , but I did it.
I was able to use the memory tests and they turned out ok. That test kept going and going, and I was told that they sometimes do that.

I have sound blaster live and exstacy program also, but the card is not in the computer at this time, and there is no printer or speakers set up on the this computer as of yet.

The last time I did an xp install, I had a problem with a black screen that said invalid disk error.
When I removed both of the ram sticks and replaced only one of them, the computer was able to restart the Recovery process, unlike before when I had both of the sticks in it.
I did try and put the other stick in, and it worked and registered. Don't know why??

So, there is the inforrmation. Hope it helps.... Conbon

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Ok Conbon,

Let's head for step two...

What you will need to do is to get the XP SP2 slipstreamed onto a CD with the XP upgrade, and for that to be bootable.

To do this I would suggest you use a fairly easy to use program called ImgBurn™ that can be downloaded from here.

This a freeware program that will help you to create a bootable CD with the XP upgrade package.

Incidently, when you ran the RAM tester that ran 'for ages', it usually does and is quite normal for those types of programs to do that.

As it did not report an adverse events with the RAM, that will not be an issue here.

The best way to get a Driver that is XP compatable for your CD ROM Drive is to go to the CD manufacturer's website and download it from there; then, install it on the computer that is going to have the upgrade put on it.

Try these steps; report back with the results, then we can progress to the next phase of your upgrade.

Kind Regards,

Re: Wanting to upgrade using XP Home Edition (Upgrade)

Hi, I have downloaded the Imgburn and placed it on this computers desktop.
I also went to HP to get the driver information about the CD rom, and there isn't one listed, because ME is out of date and there isn't any more tech support for that OS anymore.
I was unsure what to do, and I looked around for a xp cd rom driver, and there wasn't anything that I could find.
I looked in the control panel and then in the device manager under the CD rom and found that the CD rom is a Teac CD- W58E, and the other is a Pioneer DVD-rom DVD 116.
That is as far as I have gotten so far on this.

I just wanted to say that I did copy the xp upgrade to the hardddrive on my other HP and that is where it is right now.
So, I have that done, and the download of the Imgburn on the harddrive on this computer and no xp version of a driver for the CD rom as of yet.

Ok, there's a problem. I downloaded the driver and it wouldn't install. I tried again in a different directory and it still wouldn't install.

Looked all over today and I couldn't find one. Don't know what to do.
Went I went through the system in the control panel and to the device manager, I tried to look for a driver and it said that it had the best driver or a different driver wasn't necessary????
What to do now?

Hi Conbon,

Firstly, I sincerely apologise for the delayed reply, as I had to be away from the Forums for a few days due to a major family issue.

Now that I'm back for the moment, let's try some thing 'sneaky'.

Just burn that .ISO image to a CD with ImgBurn™ that I gave you earlier, on the computer that is not having the upgrade; then run the CD in the DVD Drive and install it and see what eventuates.

It might just 'behave' and allow you to do it.

Give it a try and post back with the results.

Kind Regards,

Hi, and thanks for responding.

Ok, in one of your email you said, to do it in the one computer that I am restoring.
So, lets get this straight. hehehe
I downloaded the program onto this computer that is having problems and couldn't open it. It is still on my computer desktop. If you want me to use the IMGBurn, I have that on this desktop too.

So, you are telling me to take the IMGBurn, put it on disk, and also put the other driver on disk and put them into the good computer so that they are also installed on that computer also? Then open the Imgburn and select the driver and see if it opens?

Am I correct?
Let me know..... Con

Hi Conbon,

Sorry for the confusion...

What you need to do is to create the .ISO with ImgBurn on a disc; then run the disc on the computer with the problems.

I have been under the misunderstanding that you have two computers.

If you do have two computers, just create the CD on the "Good" computer and use it on the "Crook" computer...once you have created the CD it is easily deleted from the "Good" computer.

Now if you only have one computer, try creating the .ISO image CD on that computer...but then I presume this cannot be done, as you do not have the Driver required for the CD-ROM...is this correct?

Regards,

Hi, thanks for responding.
I have been patiently waiting, well not patiently... hehehe.

I do have two computers...

Comp 1- HPxt983, good computer.
Comp 2- HP xt858, not so good computer.

Now, I have the driver downloaded on the ME. Didn't install.

So, I have the Imgburn program on the ME computer and the Driver on the ME computer. How am I going to get those on the good computer so that I can use the Imgburn to make a .ISO? Can I email them to myself to do this process?

Thanks... I will be waiting for your response.
