Windows ME does not shut down unless in safe mode
In safe mode, it shuts down fast and completely. However in normal mode it hangs at a black screen with the power light on and the fan running. I'm running a DSL connection with a wireless router that has firewall enabled. I've also tried disabling all my startup programs in msconfig and it still hangs at the black screen. So I'm stumped.

Re: Windows ME does not shut down unless in safe mode
Hello and Welcome to TSF
Possibly one or more of your drivers is not allowing itself to be unloaded, is the system up-to-date? Try holding Shift while clicking Ok in the "Shut Down" dialog - this might allow you to shut down faster, and bypass whatever is causing your system to hang. See if it helps. This can also happen if the sound file for Shutdown becomes corrupted. Double-click on the Sounds icon in Control Panel and remove or change the sound event for Shutdown.

Re: Windows ME does not shut down unless in safe mode
I had that problem before with using ME. That's just another reason why I upgraded to XP Home.
I found a fix for it, so I'll have to get back to you after I look through my tech files. Hang in there. Just hold down the ON button on the PC for 4 seconds and it will shut down after the black screen appears. No harm done. |
