Re: usb on windows98
Hi,
You will need to use the motherboard CD you got with your computer, and reinstall the USB driver set. If you don't have the CD, you will be able to get them from the manufacturers website. If you need help getting them, post your motherboard model and name.

Re: usb on windows98
You just need the drivers and to find them you need the machine's make/model and then we can look on the Internet for the drivers to install.

Re: usb on windows98
Dells website should host all of the driver downloads for a wide variety od OS's. 98 is a stretch but Dells website will be the most reliable site. All you need is the asset tag off of the machine and it should give you all kinds of drivers for that machine.

Just look in the computer manual and find what brand motherboard "chipset" is installed on the motherboard. Mine is "VIA"; http://www.viaarena.com
If yours is Intel, go to www.intel.com and search for "motherboard" or "chipset" drivers for your specific motherboard (mobo). If yours is nVidia, go to www.nvidia.com etc.............. If you can't find this info in the manual, go to www.dell.com and search for your PC's model # and find it there. You should have the chipset drivers on your Restoration CD or on a Motherboard CD that came with your PC. Just install them, then reboot, and USB should work. Good luck. p.s. I found this after a lengthy search: http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...dkub/specs.htm Your mobo uses the System chipset: Intel 440BX AGPset Search for the Intel 440BX AGP chipset drivers at www.intel.com Here's all the drivers for your PC from Dell: http://support.dell.com/support/down...&catid=&impid= Here's Dell's driver installation instructions: http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...ub/drivers.htm "Other Drivers — Control the devices, such as modem cards or network interface controller (NIC) cards, that may be installed on your system. For instructions on how to reinstall these drivers, see the device’s documentation by double-clicking the Dell Documents icon on the Windows desktop, clicking System Information, and then clicking System Documentation. NOTE: If a driver does not appear under a selected operating system on the Dell Dimension ResourceCD, then the driver is not required by that operating system." |

Re: usb on windows98
I looked up "motherboard" and "chipset" in my reference and troubleshooting manual guide.. I'm not sure where that would be. I looked up on the dell site before, and I can't find USB anywhere in it's acronym or full name. I found the proper chipset on the intel website, but I really have no idea what it will do to my computer.. it might make things worse, so I didn't download it.

Re: usb on windows98
Look in device manager (enable show hidden devices on the view menu). Are there any yellow exclamation marks? Also - in Windows98 you will probably need a specific driver for the USB drive. Install the driver before you connect the USB drive.

Re: usb on windows98
Here's Dells Device Driver Reinstallation Instructions:
If you ever need to reinstall any of these drivers, the driver files are provided on the Dell Dimension ResourceCD. Device problems can often be corrected by reinstalling the appropriate drivers. Also, hardware manufacturers frequently provide updated drivers that support feature enhancements or that correct problems. Obtain updated drivers for products purchased from Dell at the support section of the Dell World Wide Web site (http://support.dell.com). NOTICE: Drivers available on the Dell Web site have been validated for correct operation on Dell systems. Installing drivers obtained from other sources may cause errors or performance degradation. Your System’s Drivers The device drivers that can be reinstalled on your system are listed below: Yamaha Audio Driver — Enables the system’s audio controller to produce sound. Other Drivers — Control the devices, such as modem cards or network interface controller (NIC) cards, that may be installed on your system. For instructions on how to reinstall these drivers, see the device’s documentation by double-clicking the Dell Documents icon on the Windows desktop, clicking System Information, and then clicking System Documentation. NOTE: If a driver does not appear under a selected operating system on the Dell Dimension ResourceCD, then the driver is not required by that operating system. Using the Dell Dimension ResourceCD to Reinstall Drivers NOTICE: The Dell Dimension ResourceCD contains drivers for devices that might not be installed in your computer. Do not install device drivers unless you first identify the specific driver intended for the hardware installed in your computer (see "Your System’s Drivers"). Installing incorrect drivers might make your computer inoperable. 1. Start the computer’s operating system. 2. If you have not initially installed the Dell Dimension ResourceCD application program, proceed to the next step. If you have previously installed the application program, proceed to step 6. 3. Insert the Dell Dimension ResourceCD into the optical drive. The ResourceCD Installation application program automatically starts. 4. Follow the instructions on your screen. 5. When the InstallShield Wizard Complete window appears, remove the Dell Dimension ResourceCD from the optical drive, and then click Finish to restart the computer. 6. After the operating system starts, insert the Dell Dimension ResourceCD into the optical drive. The Welcome Dell System Owner screen appears. 7. Click Next. 8. Change the language in the Language list located in the upper-right corner of the window, if needed. 9. Select the model of your computer in the System Model list. 10. Select your computer’s operating system in the Operating System list. 11. Select the type of device in the Device Type list. 12. Select Drivers in the Topic list. 13. Click the name of the driver that you want to reinstall. See "Your System’s Drivers" for a list of drivers that you can reinstall on your computer. 14. Follow the instructions on the screen. |

I thought to myself: "there goes fifteen dollars". But miraculously on this board someone [who was advising someone else] had a click to a set of USB drivers that were touted to work with just about anything. The click is on this board somewhere and the downloaded driver file is NUSB31e.exe I found them at http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php and scroll down to DOWNLOAD Caution: the instructions want you to UNINSTALL all your USB device drivers, USB hub drivers, and whatnot before using NUSB31e.exe And like you I was unwilling to do that but took the chance and... VOILA, it worked perfectly. All my USB devices continue working as usual and the WIN98 UNSUPPORTED drive is now running to beat the band under Windows 98. Hope you find this helpful.... while I run off to do an errand and come back later to find that guy on this board that published the above link and saved my fifteen bucks. /techfurf

Re: usb on windows98
Hi, Win 98SE usually does USB OK, but external drives need a driver from the External drive enclosure maker. I have the same problem when no driver is included with the drive. Some makers tell you how to download the driver. I get the driver from the manufacturer.
Good Luck, Jim |

I use USB 2 with Win98SE. You first need to buy a 2.0 USB Board and stick it in your system. IOW you need to upgrade the hardware first. /Techfurf |

Re: usb on windows98
Hi, If your present hardware (motherboard?) is USB2 capable then Win98 can use it, but will probably need a driver that usually comes with the download from the external enclosure maker.
Luck, Jim |
