HP machine was purchased new when ME had just come out. I know ME is no longer supported by Windows, I need a tech that knows ME and how to resolve the following problem.
I could not get defrag nor scandisk to run in normal mode, defrag just never starts and scandisk just restarts and restarts. So went to the safe mode. Here I did get defrag to operate and defragged the machine. Then while in safe mode I tried scandisk. It says have restarted 10 time do you want to continue etc. And it keeps restarting. How do I get scandisk to work? I have had this problem as long as I have had the Windows ME OS, I used to know which program is running the background even in safe mode. But that was a while back and I have forgotten. The standard scandisk works, it is the thorough that I am having the problem with. I no longer get online with this one because it has no protection. But I do a lot of work with it off line. It has very few programs on it and I want to clean it up before I install UBUNTA on in addition to ME. I hope this works because I want both OS's on the machine. Last edited by sluggo123; 04-30-2007 at 08:54 PM. Reason: omitted some info |

Re: Scandisk keeps starting over
Press Ctrl,Alt,Delete, once then shutdown everthing in the list but Explorer and Systray this should let you run scandisk.
You can also turn off uneeded start up programs by Start>run> type in the box "msconfig" you can turn off everthing in there but the above, however don't turn of your virus scan, firewall or anything that starts with KB, these are MS updates |

Re: Scandisk keeps starting over
. . . in addition to Doby's instructions - don't forget to turn off any screensavers (set screensavers to "none") or power management settings (choose "Never" for most of the power management settings) - [and, if your PC is a laptop, always run system utilities like this with the AC adapter plugged in].
[also - if you've no cable or wireless for network/Internet access on the WinMe PC, you can safely disable firewalls and antivirus during your disk scans]. . . . Gary p.s. -- Ubuntu should install fine, so long as you have a large enough hard drive. Nearly all Linux distros have decent partitioning tools to handle setting up the partitions easily.

Re: Scandisk keeps starting over
Hi, Just a thought - A drive that is too full may also cause the problem you have. If the drive has less that about 20 - 25 percent free space scandisk and defrag may not have enough room to perform their tasks. Delete some unneeded data to make more head room. MAYBE!
Good Luck, Jim |
