windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

I am writing because I am having a real hard time finding a appropriate driver for an LCD monitor in windows 3.1. Is it even possible to use a flat screen monitor with win3.1. I am trying desperately to get a business computer moving toward the 21st century. I have it configured for dual boot with win XP pro but I cant use a lcd in windows 3.1 because the resolution is wrong

anyone have any experience in this. AND yes I do understand that 3.1 is well outside of its support period.

Re: windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Windows 3.1 will only support display as a standard VGA display - that means 16 colours. You will have to install extra video drivers to get a decent 256 colour display.
Look at the following link, it may help assist you

Re: windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

I have actually already tried that site to no avail

it is not the colors that is an issue
it is actually the aspect ratio I think

the screen ends up going way off screen and only will display in 600X480

I am using a 15" HP lcd and the display works just fine in Dos but not in win 3.11.

I hope someone has some ideas or experience in this

please help

Re: windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

Hi Koonsie

Another tactic would be to use a tool like Microsoft's Virtual PC, and run 3.1 in emulation --- hopefully would be less trouble for things like graphics and sound. You still may not be able to use the letter-box resolution of an LCD widescreen, but you should be able to manage something better than 640x480 at 16colors

Microsoft's homepage for Virtual PC --- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx
MS download page for Virtual PC 2004 --- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
MS download page for Virtual PC 2007 --- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow...c/default.mspx

Helpful Sycthe.org thread for running a virtual 3.1 on MS Virtual PC --- http://www.sythe.org/showthread.php?t=147576

Best of luck

Re: windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

THANK YOU GARY

I am going to try that when i get a new HD (i started testing on a 8gig hd)

Upgrading to 40 should allow me to try VPC and I think that might be the best solution to use

a question about it

Can you copy and paste out of it into XP.

and how much memory should I have to run win 3.1 in VPC and Xp. Thank you so so much for this suggestion

its the best I have got

Re: windows 3.1 with an LCD monitor

Hi again

Sometimes the virtual machines can be a little tricky to setup, but Virtual PC 2004 does support copy and paste from guest VM to the host. Here's a quote from a Microsoft TechNet article that compares Virtual PC 2004 to Virtual Server --- "With a simple drag-and-drop operation, (Virtual PC 2004) users can move or copy and paste items from a guest operating system to the host operating system, and vice versa." Here's a link to the rest of the article --- http://technet2.microsoft.com/window....mspx?mfr=true --- (the article is actually just a little side-track from a larger series of articles for corporate users of Virtual Server).

Check out the system requirements from the download page for the Virtual PC version you decide to try. A healthy amount of memory is a good idea when running Virtual PC on an XP Pro machine -- but very little extra system memory (beyond that required for Virtual PC and XP Pro) is required for the emulated 3.1 machine itself.

Best of luck
. . . Gary
