Suprised Help no sound... very strange! windows98se

Hi, first time here but need to be as I'm getting frustrated with my computer!!

My problem is, I bought some new speakers to hook up to my computer ( very easy plug in, no drivers or software!) and plugged them in to find no sound. Unplugged them and put the old speakers back on to test and whoa... no sound.
have tried all the obvious (to me who is not that computer literate!), making sure volume isn't muted and making sure the sound cards are enabled, making sure cable is in the right hole. I am not recieving any error messages.
Is there any chance that my sound card has died?? Or a bug getting into my system and disabling it? Gee I don't know!
Any help or direction would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Hi,
If it's a sound card (not onboard) - make sure it's seated correctly in the slot on the motherboard.

Re: Help no sound... very strange! windows98se

I have never seen plugging in a set of speaker wipe out sound drivers, just seems impossible to do.
What comes to mind is your not plugging the speaker into the correct connector. They are usually color coded and most times your use the green port for the speakers.

Have you tested those speakers on another computer?

Grin Re: Help no sound... very strange! windows98se

Hi, I tested them with a different cable on my dvd player and they work fine. I've found that in life there are a lot of coincidences of when things go wrong and wonder if possibley it is just the time for my onboard sound to die!!
Anyways getting someone with a bit more know how to have a look for me today.

thanks for all the suggestions
