software conflict
Greetings to all,
This is my first post and I am not sure if I'm in right area but I didn't see anywhere else to post. I'm running Win98SE and am having problems with a conflict with Nero Express 6 (InCd 4) and my Umax VistaScan scanner. My dinosaur system (Compaq Presario 5BW137) was originally equipped with Adaptec (now Roxio) CD/CDRW software. I recently replaced the CDROM/CDRW with LiteOn hardware which came bundled with Nero Express 6 software. Prior to such replacement my old (but trusty) Umax Astra 600P scanner/copier served me quite well. I don't use it all that often but when I tried to use it the other day I was greeted with a 'fatal exception error'. It has taken me several frustrating days of resetting my computer back to factory speqs. and loading/reloading programs to realize that the scanner/copier functions properly until such time as I load the Nero software. I have downloaded the most recent (1999 ) Umax updates, all to no avail.I am stuck with this computer system and can't afford a new scanner which would probably be tooooo sofisticated for my system anyway. Does anyone have any idea if it is possible to work around this conflict???? Many thanks for any thoughts on the matter. |

Re: software conflict
Hi Moondancer
Will the older version Adaptec/Roxio recording software work with the new LiteON drive? If it does, you have the option to use your Recovery Set again, and simply not install the Nero. Another alternative, if you happened to still have the old Adaptec software installed when you installed Nero 6, is to uninstall the Adaptec software before installing the Nero. Those two never did get along well (still don't, really - rather like a Roxio vs. Nero wrestling match). You might try running a Registry Cleaner in between, too [run your Registry Cleaner after removing Adaptec, but before installing Nero]. If you haven't a registry cleaning program already, CCleaner is pretty good, and it's free --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...-10315544.html Best of luck . . . Gary I happen to have an old UMAX 600S (the SCSI version of the same scanner you have) -- the darn thing still works, but the driver support stopped long ago [as you've already found out]. The UMAX doesn't see much action here anymore, since a Canon MP390 came on the scene a few years ago & stole it's thunder :) [P.S. ... and Welcome to the Tech Support Forums!]

Re: software conflict
Greetings OldGrayGary,
I very much appreciate your response. Unfortunately, the Adaptec software (circa 2000) doesn't work with my new Lite-On CD-ROM/CD-DVD Combo. I am aware that Adaptec (Roxio) and Nero do not like each other. They are sort of the Hatfield and McCoys of the cd burning community. Prior to installing Nero, I removed the Adaptec software (I have an old program called ‘CleanSweep’ by Quarterdeck that does an amazing job of deleting programs and related files) and I used RoxioZap to cleanup any stray files. I do use CCleaner as well as Windows Registry Repair Pro. I shot off an enquiry to Nero.com a few days ago but have yet to receive a response, not that I suppose I really expect to get one. It is indeed a mystery. I am also an 'old gray one' and have lots of time on my hands to figure this out; but, if not, I shall just insist that 'hubby' buy me a new 'fancy-dancy' system with all the toys to keep me happy. HeeHee!! Many thanks for your time and effort. |

Re: software conflict
Optical drives aren't tied to the programs that come with them. They'll take orders from any software as long as it can communicate properly. I wonder if ImgBurn would work with your new drive? It might be worth it to just uninstall teh Nero software and try some freeware burning programs.

If your going to try freeware CD burning, try CDBurnerXP Pro.

Hey Bartender and Tim85,
Many thanks for your suggestions. You have definitely given me 'food for thought' and a couple new 'toys' to play around with that should keep me busy and out of trouble for awhile.

Re: software conflict
HI OGG,
You mentioned that your old UMAX 600S still works. What burning software were you using on the system that you had your Umax 600S scanner/copier connected to? Quote:

Re: software conflict
Hi again all -
MoonDancer -- it had the same burner software you had originally -- Adaptec's Easy CD Creator [the original burner on it was a blazing 2x]. I can't remember if we ever put a different software in there, since as soon as we had a newer burner (on a different computer), the old Sony got to take life easy. You might be OK with an old version of Nero, perhaps 5 or earlier. I probably wouldn't go any newer than version 5 with Win9x --- http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=nero There are many versions of CDBurnerXP Pro,too. If you try a newer one & it doesn't help, the older ones might [I'm a little surprised they put the 'XP' in the program title, since they've had Win9x compatibility in most of their versions]. If you find the mix that works, post your successful recipe here, and other users of the Ancient Umax scanners can benefit from your cooking. . . . Gary
