Recovery Disk

How can we get our recovery disk to work? Like when should we put it in?The problem is it is missing one of the files, and will the recovery disk fix that?because the message comes up before the windows start.

What is the error message? What file does it say is missing?

And normally, you put in the recovery disk and then restart the computer.

a recovery disk usually takes the computer back to the day that you received it,then you have to reload everything
although some of the newer models offer a non destructive recovery
if you know what file it is missing you may be able to get it off the net through a google search and avoid the reinstall
try a system restore first to a date when everything was ok

tap f8 when booting and see if you get the boot options menu
if you do try
last known good configuration
safe mode, this should ask if you widh to do a system restore before you push the button to go into safe mode

Right now we have the windows xp disk in the pc and it says that windows setup at the top of the blue screen and at the bottom it says Setup is loading files (kernel debugger DLL)...
Does this usually take time to do?it has been about 10 minutes now.

yes you inicially said you had a recovery disk which is different from an xp disk
you boot the computer from the xp disk and choose install
ignore the first repair option and continue with install
when windows finds the previous installation and offer to repair
then do the repair
this will leave all of your files instact but you will have to reinstall the updates again

you need to find out if your husband attempted a clean install or a repair install
