Recovery Disk
How can we get our recovery disk to work? Like when should we put it in?The problem is it is missing one of the files, and will the recovery disk fix that?because the message comes up before the windows start.

a recovery disk usually takes the computer back to the day that you received it,then you have to reload everything
although some of the newer models offer a non destructive recovery if you know what file it is missing you may be able to get it off the net through a google search and avoid the reinstall try a system restore first to a date when everything was ok

tap f8 when booting and see if you get the boot options menu
if you do try last known good configuration safe mode, this should ask if you widh to do a system restore before you push the button to go into safe mode

yes you inicially said you had a recovery disk which is different from an xp disk
you boot the computer from the xp disk and choose install ignore the first repair option and continue with install when windows finds the previous installation and offer to repair then do the repair this will leave all of your files instact but you will have to reinstall the updates again
