Win ME - ScanDisk Runs On Restart Everytime the PC is turned on.
I am having some trouble with my daughters pc. Everytime, and I mean every time, the PC is turned on Scan Disk wants to run. An Error pops up saying "Improper shutdown detected. Checking disks for errors..." Here is a screen shot if you need it. We tried to let scandisk run but 2 days later it was still running. Nothing seems to progress and I am at a huge loss of what needs done. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Noegruts
. . . and Welcome to the Tech Support Forums. A few things to try: 1) A patch for older systems with large hard drives that might not be able to clear the disk-caches quickly enough on shutdown - causing Windows to automatically start ScanDisk at startup --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/273017 2) Check the disk itself for errors, by downloading & running a diagnostic. The downloads can create either a bootable CD or bootable floppy diskette - the diagnostics run when the computer is booted from the diagnostic CD/floppy. --- http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 3) If the situation continues, even after applying the Shutdown patch, and the hard drive passes the diagnostics, - try booting into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer powers on) - and let ScanDisk run all the way till it's finished. Then shutdown, restart, and see if things are better. 4) If the situation still continues, there is a way to disable such automatic scans by editing a hidden Windows system file (you'd have to set Windows Explorer to "show hidden files" from the Tools/Folder Options/View menus) - you can use NotePad to do the editing. The file is called MSDOS.SYS, and it should be on your C drive. You change a value to zero in the "Options" section: [Options] AutoScan=0 That will completely disable ScanDisk from running at Startup. 5) Make sure to scan the computer for malware, as infections can cause unpredictable behavior like this. Best of luck . . . Gary
