Confused 98SE reinstall, new hard drive missing files

First I installed a 2nd new 250gig Maxtor hard drive, moved a bunch of data onto it, then formatted my old 20gig C drive, and reinstalled Win 98SE. I could see my old files on the D drive. Then I installed Office, Nero burning , and Norton system works. I installed them to a folder I called Program files on the D drive. Then the next time I started up the computer I got some error messages from Norton saying it could't find some files for Norton anti virus.

It turns out none of the data on the D drive (the 250gigone) is visible- or when I go to look at it , the folders are all there, but when I open the folders, it shows all the data, but the names are funny- Its like small letter, capital letter alternating, and the temporary file tilda is after the name. When the mouse hovers over the file it has the info on it- last modified, etc.

when I go to open word (Office version '97) I get "D:\Program Files\Office\Office\WinWORD.EXE is not a valid Win32 application

Same thing with Excel

Where do I start? Thanks!!!!

addendum-just want new hard drive data

Since 98SE doesn't recognize more thatn 137GB, my plan is to install XP. Question,

I have the old 20 gig hard drive, and the new 250 gig hard drive- both are 7200rpm- I want the data I put on the big hard drive, although I backed up to CD the really important stuff, but there is always something lurking around that you want to dig up later, but is it better to have XP installed on the 20gig hard drive and use the big one for all my files, or should I just put XP on the big drive and use the small one for image backups of the big one?

OR......Whats the best configuration for the speediest access of the files? Partition the big one with a small 10 gig area for XP and programs? suggestions???

Thanks,

Actually, Win98SE uses FAT32, which doesn't like partitions over 32gb.
XP Pre-SP1 doesn't like partitions over about 130GB.
You don't want around ten drive letters on your 250gb so Win98 can use it, so I'd put XP on the new drive, but give it at least 2 partitions.
May as well use the new one. It's newer, so, less likely to fail or develop bad sectors, and it's possibly faster, quieter & cooler.

Just an update- I removed the old 20 gig HD, installed the maxtor 250 gig, formatted as new boot drive, then installed XP, and am now running again. will next try to add the old 20 gig.

Its been over a week now and now have SP2 added in. Haven't rebooted more than the initial *restart* that they have you do, but so far so good.

Word doc is invalid

Installed office 2000 sp3
Word document not valid
has to do with office 2000 and sp3 and norton antivirus.
renam officeav.dll to officeav1.dll. and reboot.
Maybe this won't work for 97
