I can't get my win98 computer to show up on the LAN. All hardware is working so it must be something in WIN98 that is not working. WinXP computers are connecting to internet but WIN98 won't connect. All of my computers a connected to a LAN that also has a DSL modem connected to the internet. This was working but had to reinstall win98 and now I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

Check to make sure your network card has the drivers installed correctly.
Control Panel --> System. Make sure that a yellow question mark under "Others" or that a yellow exclamation point under "Network Adapters" is NOT present. If it is, then you need to reinstall your network drivers. If all is ok there, Click Start, Run, Type in "winipcfg" (without the quotes.) Click the drop down to make sure the network adapter is listed and check the ip. If it is there, the ip should not be 169.xxx... or 0.0.0.0. If you are able to get on the internet after all of this and it still does not show up in Network. Control panel --> Network Tick the two boxes to share printers and files, follow the instructions, reboot and all will be "gooder"

There are a plethora of options that could be wrong...Let us see if I can remember most of them.
First of all, you are going through a router/switch or something similar right? If so, are the other computers on the network able to access: each other/the internet? 1) If not, the problem is in the router settings somewhere, make sure your cables are in the right ports. Make sure the internet cable is plugged into the WAN port, and computers are plugged into the others. 2) If they can , then the problem lies on the workstation side: Go into IE, Tools > Internet Options > Connections, and make sure it is set to "never dial a connection" Open the Connection Properties (not exactly sure how to get here, although it should be fairly easy to find). Click on the TCP/IP protocol and go to Advanced or Settings (not sure of the correct wording as i haven't used 98 in a while) and make sure it is set to automatically obtain IP. Go back to the Connection Properties and make sure you have file and print sharing enabled (a big security hole, but neccessary if you want to be able to share stuff on the network) This SHOULD fix your problem, if not let me know and I'll see what else I can come up with. If you have a computer with WinXP you could use the network setup wizard via 3.5" floppy that works fairly well bah! you beat me to it
