problem with colors and resolution
Hi everybody,
I am new to this forum, but laready have a question ;) I have a Compaq Presario laptop and besides everything else working fine - my display shows only 16 colors and the lowest resolution. Whenever I try to change these settings - after I hit apply - it says that the computer needs to restart in order for changes to take effect. However, after I restart the computer - nothing changes - it's all the same. I tried everything I could think of - from installing and updating drivers, changing the setting to "apply changes without restarting" trying different kinds of display options. Does anybody know what I need to do do to fix this problem? My laptop info: under the screeen it says Compaq Presario 1270 Underneath the laptop it says Model NUMBER 1456VQL1N Series CM 2040 Thanks. |

If you happen to be running Windows 98/Me/NT4 then you can download the drivers and install them. However, Windows XP and 2000 should use the default drivers that come with the OS.

Try this one. It should be the correct one for your ATI 3D Rage LT Pro video adapter. make sure to go to the Device Manager and Uninstall the video adapter first, reboot and then install the package. If the computer starts up asking to go through a install process just cancel it because you will be installing the package without Window's automated process.

Hey Jvigil - YOU'RE THE MAN !!!!!!!
It works perfectly now!!!! I got the higher resolution and 32-bit colors! It does say in Device Manager that the Monitor is "Unknown Monitor" but I guess that doesn't matter? Hey all you people out there - if you have the same problem - this is THE WAY to fix it! Many thanks and all the best to you Jvigil! Thanks again, djv

Problem with color and display after clean 98 install
I have a Mecer 185P laptop with a Silicon Motion 810 LynxE Video Driver.
After clean install of Win98 the screen size is small and the color is only 16bit. I have tryed to update the drivers through the Device manager but am still stuck with the small screen and 16 bit color. How do I find out what the make of the laptop screen is? How do I get the screen to go big? |

Some laptops, especially the Toshiba series, are limited to 1, yes ONE, resolution to fill the screen. Usually this is 1024x768. Make sure that the resolution is at least 1024x768 and that the newest drivers have been installed for your onboard video card. Windows 98 most likely will not have the most recent driver, and I have yet to find the website for the Mecer company. I will continue to look.

Color and Res.
Thank you for looking into my problem. I have tryed to change the monitor but I can on do this in the device manager window, and when I do get it changed it uses the same file for the different monitor, Or I get a message that says the display properties are limited and are for trouble shooting purposes only (ie safe mode). I don't have the monitor select option in the Display properties / Settings window and the only color setting is 16 color and I can't change the Res., it is stuck at 640/480 by 16 color Safe Mode but it doesn't say so in the corners.
By the way, I noticed that the Startup/bios screen are small as well. Thank you again, Daniel |

No, under no circumstances should you load Windows 95 lol. What monitor do you have? I need the brand and model number (i.e. ViewSonic A70f, Hitachi SuperScan Elite 802, etc.).

I was only able to get the maker of the screen. It is a NEC TFT screen. The problem is when I try to get info about the laptop I get stonewalled at Mecer
I have tryed searching for M185's all over the place. I have tryed downoading drivers for NEC screens but it seems like they never apply after I select the new driver. Thanks for you help. Danny |
