Yamaha 6416s cd-rom problem
Please help. I have the above cd rom installed on my system. I presume it is a scsi device. Could some one please tell me how you create a boot up floppy disc that will allow me cd rom support. I have tried many discs but to no avail.. The other problem I have with this device is that no matter what cd you load it sees it as an audio cd/cda. I have been told I can alter this but no one seems to know how.
I use a Symbios Logic 8100s PCI SCSI adapter: 53c810 device. Many thanks Angie |

Hi,
If the cdrom is physically connected to your 53c810 card then it must be a scsi device. I assume your running win95/98 as I don't believe there are any other drivers for sym53c810 chip scsi cards. Please note that this chip was released in 1997(?) so support for it has long ended. I think the last driver release by Symbios was in 2000. The driver bundles support for one or more chip families, ie sym53c8xx. I think Win98 CDROM will have a driver for this chip, however first check if a driver is already installed. The win98 driver may successfully install under winME but that does not mean it'll function correctly. Bring up the Device Manager window, Control-panel->system->device-manager , under SCSI controllers you'll see "Symbios Logic 8100s PCI SCSI adapter: 53c810 device", goto properties, if device status = "this device is working properly" then the driver is installed and your on your way. To check that the comms between the card and the cdrom is ok have a look under 'CDROM' in device-manager. Check for device status = "this device is working properly". The device driver handles the lower communications layer of the SCSI interface, this layer is responsible for sending and receiving raw data to and from the SCSI card. It's the application layer that interprets data on the CD that is loaded in the drive, most apps will use an API (APSI) to read/write to the scsi cdrom. Application --> APSI ---> device-driver (53c8xx) It's hard to tell what APSI driver you've installed on your PC as they normally get written to the vmm32.vxd file. Most apps will include APSI in their installations, ie. Nero Burning. Download APSI from adaptec or get hold of a program called ASPICheck. MAke sure you get the version that supports your operating system. Hope this helps. Cheers, Ric |
