Problems with new RAM
Hope someone can help me. I have 64MB of SDRAM PC133 on my computer with OS Win98. I bought new SDRAM PC100 256MB and removed my old 64MB then inserted my new SDRAM into my computer. When I started up my computer, on the screen appeared numbers counting up towards 256 MB then my screen turned into a whole bunch of different colored squares that kept flashing continuously. Did I buy the wrong SDRAM?

Hey Man....
This Problem Basically Arises Due To Faulty Hardware, That Can Be Anything From Faulty RAM Chip To Faulty RAM Slot. Note:-- Two RAM One Of PC100 & The Other PC133 Combinedly Work At A Maximum Of PC100 & Not PC133 Here Are The Steps which Might Help U .... First Check All The RAM Slots By Putting The 64MB Good RAM. Place The Working 64MB PC133 SDRAM With The 256MB PC100 SDRAM & Boot The PC, If The Problem Still Persists... (i) Check The 256MB RAM Physically For Any Short Circuit, i.e. The IC's Don't 've Any Dry Solders. (ii) Any Of The 10 Ohm Or 0 Ohm Resitence Pack Maybe Faulty.... If Possible Use A Multimeter To Check It (iii)The Capacitor (Which Stores The Charge) May Be Faulty. (iv)Check For Any Burns,Track Burns,Trackcuts etc. Clean The Connectors Of The RAM (Gold Plated) Connectors, & The ICs (The Big Black Thing On The RAM) Connectors With Isopropyl Solution (IP Solution) Or Thinner Or Even A Good Quality Eraser . Also Clean The ZIF Slot (The Slot Where You Insert The RAM) With Thinner Or IP Solution Only. Try Once Again.... Put In Different Slot And Try Again. Note :--- The Cleaning Is Done To Do Away With Any Carbon Contents Lurking On The Connectors Of The RAM Or The Slot. If Nothing Good Happens....., I Suppose The 256MB RAM Is Faulty (But Can Be Repaired Easily By Resoldering .........Maybe...) Don't Even Think About Resoldering It Yourself If You Are Not A Proffessional Hope All Gets Well C Ya |

What The Hell Is PC130.... Forget It , The Procedure Still Remain The Same
I Forgot To Tell You Something....... (I was In A hurry) Win9x Cannot Handle More Than 768 Mb Of RAM Without Tweaking It's SYSTEM.INI File. This Will Cause Memmory Errors During Installation Of Windows,Running Some Application,High Graphic Games Like Half-Life, Max pyne etc. The Tweak:--- Restart Your System In MS-DOS Mode Jump To Your Windiws directory The Prompt Should Look Like x:\windows where 'x' Is the Drive letter in which your winidws directory resides Once There Type edit system.ini (press enter) In The Open File With Blue Background Search For A Header Named [386Enh] Below That Add A line MaxPhysPage=30000 Press Alt+x (To Exit) Press y (Save The File) You 'll return Back To MY Favourite ..... DOS-Prompt (I Love DOS) Type Restart Or Win Or push The restart button To Go Back To The Ugly Windows C Ya (In Hell )

Since he only has 256mb of RAM, I'm not sure what the previous message was trying to tell him.
The most likely scenarios are a compatibility issue or bad memory. Are you sure the MB is compatible with the memory you purchased? All PC-133 memory is not created equal. You might also download Memtest86 and run it overnight on the new memory if you get by the first issue. My guess is it's bad memory...
