Problem installing webcam

L.S.,

I've bought a Sweex USB ja000050 webcam (for 98se (installed on this computer), 2000, XP) and tried to get in working as told in manual. Everything goes well, but when I start up the camera it says something like 'no video capturing hardware avaible'. If I then check the 'hardware' there is a question mark in front of the webcam-connection. The reason for the question mark is 'Could not load from VTXKern.vxd. Code 2'. I also tried to first let it find the camera and then install the drivers, but that didn't help as well.

I have no clue how to solve this, do you?

i'm guessing that the pc is an old one (win98se) and that it is using usb1. i had problems using a webcam on an older pc with usb1 (with win2k) and when i used it on a pc with usb2 it worked properly.
webcams generally have high enough minimum requirements to run, make sure your pc meets them.

@ freddyhard: I especially checked for that, and that is why I took this webcam. It is designed for Win98SE, so I thought that the usb shouldn't give a problem. But, I'll check agian... and these are the specs:

* Multi Output: 160 x 120; 176 x 144; 320 x 240; 352 x 288; 640 x 480 (Interpolated) pixels
* Support for CIF Sensor
* Built-in microphone
* 30 frames per second
* Multi Video, Output, RGB and I420
* Small size lens: 1/4 inch CMOS
* Focus manually adjustable from 30 mm to infinity
* USB 1.1 interface
* Automatic and manual adjustment options
* Temperature 5 °C ~ 40 °C
* Relative humidity 10% R.H. ~ 80% R.H.
* Windows 98SE, 2000 and XP compatible

I think that USB is not the problem...

win98se isn't as much the problem as usb1. when i had mine on usb1 it wouldn't record sound and sometimes the video stopped. but on usb2 it worked fine. i'm only guessing when you said the pc has win98se that it is an old one.

at least check that the pc meets the minimum requirements - probably 1GHz CPU and 512MB RAM.

Hi Koos, The info you have here is all correct. In addition - Win 98 never had decent USB1. 98SE cured the problems. Most any USB2 device will work at USB1 but at the lower speed. Look in System Manager at USB and see if it is present and claims to be working. If not remove it from System Manager and reboot and then check again. If it's still not there then reload Win98 over itself. If you have an official Microsoft CD you will not lose anything. If it's not working by now then look for patches at Microsoft.com.

Good Luck, Jim

@ Jlp1928 (thanks for the suggestion) & freddyhard: it looks like a more common problem then I thought. Checked the Microsoft website, searched again and I might have found a solution. I think the first time I searched at the Microsoft website I used wrong search terms...

I'll let you know if it helped!

Well, I have been strugling again for an evening to get the #$!* thing installed but I have given up. I have tried all solutions a found on the net (including the extracting and replacing drivers, installing Win98), but none worked. So, that computer will get C:/format within a few weeks to be build up from scratch again.

you could try a 'top' install of win98 as Jlp1928 said above. it might save you having to reinstall all other software again.

@ freddyhard: As far as I can tell, this computer has been used by 4 different people the past decade. In that time not much has been done updating ect and many times things have been patched. Based on this I think it is better to start all over again...
