98 not loading

We're working on a friends pc. When you turn it on, it goes thru' the memory test, detects the primary master hdd. detects the cdrom. Then we end up with a message that states: Primary Master HDD S.M.A.R.T Capibility Disabled. Followed by a A:> I tried the boot disk for win98, thinking it would start it going....it takes me to microsoft scandisk...which it is unable to complete. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Marlene,

Download the drive manufacturer's utility and test the drive. A S.M.A.R.T. error is usually indicative of a dying drive. Since you didn't mention the brand name, here is a link to all drive manufacturer's:

Manufacturer’s websites for the utilities of all drive makes and models

Hi, The error message may only be to remind you that SMART is not turned on in the BIOS Setup. Go into Setup and enable it and see if the error goes away.

Good Luck, Jim
