I find many things about Windows XP disagreeable and want to go back to Milennium
I wonder if I can get a witness that XP is just way overdeveloped, and intrusive.
It takes control and imposes updates on me I don't want, among other things. I'm irked about the strange location for My Documents - under Documents and Settings and the file with the name of the guy that set the computer up - which i CAN'T CHANGE! - and - why didn't they just leave it under the hard drive directory? It is just too sophisticated. Most people say they don't like Milennium Edition, but I'm thinking of "downgrading" back to it, on this new computer, which has a Pentium D. Will it be possible to do that, and what disadvantages would there be? |

Hi,
I think many think that way when they first use XP. However, one rarely finds anyone who would really go back after they have used XP for a few weeks. It is my opinion that you need to rethink your stance because XP has so many more features, is much more stable, and is simply a much better operating system. ME is probably (yep, I have used it and have a copy laying around) the best example of poor engineering that has ever come out of Microsoft Corp. Hey, that is my opinion, so thought I would send it your way.

Hi,
Win ME is almost without exception the worst O/S M$ ever released. Fortunately I skipped ME and went from 98 to 98SE and then to XP. Stick with XP it is a much better O/S. Ensure you have all the updates SP 1 SP2 etc. ceri |

1st option: Turn off Automatic Updates and manually do so by chosing Custom in the main Windows/Microsoft Update page.
2nd option: In Automatic Updates, select either Non-Automatic Install or Notification Only. NB: Automatic Updates is accessed through the Control Panel. Quote:
You can also change the default location of Program Files and Common Files ( http://www.techsupportforum.com/showpost.php?p=564051&postcount=6). You can also change the default location of the Temporary Internet Files (IE > Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Temporary Internet Files Settings > Move Folder). And you can do a host of other great things with XP, haskellbob, while enjoying a much stabler, more secure and safer environment, based on the more reliable NT Kernel and what this brings (e.g. NTFS). Having invested in a new-technology machine calls for getting on the faster-moving, legacy-free train of XP. |

Hi Bob, I have to agree. I want to run the computer and not have it run me. I do too many things that XP doesn't want me to do. I hear lot's of bad things about ME and did try it once. 98SE does everything I need. I do keep a couple of spare machines set up with XP and 2000 as I get many requests for help from friends and relatives. If i remember correctly, no earlier version of Windoze will load over a newer one. I'm pretty sure you will have to clean the drive and start over.
Hope this helps a bit, Jim Last edited by Jlp1928; 11-27-2006 at 08:14 AM. |
