can't get out of MS-DOS

I'm trying to run windows 98, but everytime I try to start up it starts in msdos mode and says: The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 22. I can start it in safe mode, but that's it. Thanks in Advance

thanks, but it didn't work. I got a message about a missing program and it said to press any key to continue and eventally it got to the screen that says its safe to turn your computer. I changed the file back to config.sys.

yes I just did, emm386 is missing and himen.sys was not found. I don't really have anything worth keeping on it. I was thinking about installing another OS on it, but it doesn't have internet (I'm posting from another computer) and I can't use a cd in safe mode.

Hi,

What system are you thinking of installing? What legitimate OS disk do you have with a valid serial number? Maybe we can help you that way.

I'm thinking about installing ReactOS, only because it's compatible with windows. I don't have the cd for the original OS, and again I ca't really do anything in safe mode.

Hi,

I deleted the info that did not work for you, but left the link for you to look at later. I am not really familar with the ReactOS, so won't be much help to you. Do you by any chance have the valid Win98 OS disk? If you do, then I will help you Fdisk and get it set up for usage as it was before. We could install it after you Fdisk the drive.

Hi,

I am sorry nate, I don't understand what you mean by installing internet in safe mode. What are you trying to install? I mean, you must have an OS like Win98 on the computer to access the internet. Sorry, but I am still at a loss how to help since I don't understand what you are needing.

I can only start windows in safe mode and I can't use a cd. I need a cd to install internet and then install the OS. So, is there anyway I can use a cd in safe mode?

Hi,

Without a copy of the CD, actually, there is not much you can do at all.

Re: can't get out of MS-DOS

Tell me which CD you found, like which OS. Is it Win98 or WinXP, and then we will go from there. The instructions are different so tell me and we will give it a try.
