that doesn't eally make sense since when your PC is turned off it has no power.

there should be a small hole in the front of your CD that will allow a straightened out paper clip to be pushed inside, and with a little bit of force will push a lever inside that forces the CD ROM to open.
This will only work though if the unit is powered off OR there is no CD inside.
If a CD is inside and has mounted to the play position, then the tray is locked and cannot be forced open.It will only open when the mechanism inside "unmounts" so that motor that drives the CD spindle has disengaged and the CD is free and can be removed.
Quite frequently the CD ROM goes into an "error recovery" mode which means that it can't quite read a part of the CD properly. It goes into a loop trying to read and recover data. In this case it may take quite a long time for the system to recover (if at all) and allow the CD to be freed. This can also result in the PC "crashing" or appearing to crash because so much time & resource is devoted to reading the error that everything seems to stop.
Most users in this situation do one of two things. Power OFF or reset the PC.
In order to understand whether the CD or the Controler is at fault a known working CD-ROM should be installed and tried.
Before doing that though, take a good look at your CD's. If they look like the local Ice Hockey team have just played Hockey on it .. try using a NEW CD and seeing if that works.
It is a total fallacy that CD's are indestructible, they should be treated with more respect than old vinyl disks (which should only ever be handled once in their lifetime or risk damage)
If the CD ROM has been working satisfactorily until now, it is unlikely to be related to either cable or configuration.

Hi, You already got good help. A little little diagnostic help: All the CD drive needs to eject the disk is the power connector. No flat IDE cable or driver is
necessary. It will also play music from the front earphone connector or the rear analog and digital connectors if the drive has a play button. Try another power connector from the PSU. If it still wont eject the drive is Bad.

Good Luck, Jim
