Internet conncetion problem-Help!
Computer uses windows 1998
All cables lines connected, cable modem has no issues either. I checked the IP address, and it was no longer there. So I released it and renewed it. An IP address now exists for my SMC ethernet adaptor. Under winiconfg, the same ip address shows up as the ip address under ipconfig. I went into the network connection, and clicked the obtains IP automatically. I followed some other directions that were given to me. However, after all of this no conncetion can be made, as it says server unavailable. Could it be something else? Virus? Registry problem. I am not sure , so help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi ubp
You cable provider is usually the best source of help for this sort of thing. After all, you are paying them good money for their service. All ISP's require some sort of authentication, whether the MAC address of your cable-modem, or an encrypted logon & password (more common with DSL). Are you using a router along with your cable modem? If your ISP uses the MAC address of your PC's ethernet adapter, rather than that of the "modem", then you'd have to "clone" the MAC address of the computer used to setup your first connection to your ISP - in the configuration of your router. But your ISP can walk you through all these steps one at a time. If the connection was working fine for a long time, and only recently ran into trouble - yes, it could be infection-related. Run your scans on "thorough" settings. If you find serious infections, you can try the 5-Step Security checklist here at Tech Support Forums http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...kthis-log.html If you system scans clean, for a try at a quick-fix, see if the utility Winsockfix helps --- http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257 Best of luck . . . Gary
