Computer boots into Hibernate mode

I'm suffering from a downpour of problems on my win 98 compaq ipaq. First, the keyboard and mouse stopped working, suddenly. Then after reboot, it can no longer find the mouse, it boots up hibernating, and when I shut it down the keyboard light stays on, as well as the lan card light. If I pull the plug, as soon as I plug it back in again the lan light comes back on. I've tried switching the mouse and keyboard positions and I still get the missing mouse message. Neither mouse or keyboard are USB. If I don't get the missing mouse message then the mouse moves a little bit and freezes, taking with it all control of the keyboard. If I don't move the mouse then I'm free to operate my computer via keyboard for as long as it decides to run. I've set the BIOS defaults back, I've tried a rollback. The thing has no cd drives and no floppy drives so telling me to reformat isn't going to get me anywhere. I need help very badly, I've been tinkering with it for over 8 hours trying to fix it and I can't seem to figure anything out. Thanks in advance for any help anyone is willing to give me.

Have you tried a different mouse?

This will not work, the mouse has to be connected to the mouse port and the keyboard connected to the keyboard port, thats why they are specified on the back of the computer.

Can you boot into Safe Mode? (tapping F8 at boot)
