Windows 98 won't load

I'm working on a Gateway PC for my mother that's running windows 98. It boots as far as the windows logo & stops. It then goes to 98 Start Up Menu where it says "Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose command prompt only & run SCANREG." When I run that I get: Following file missing or corrupted: CDROM, WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS, DBLBUFF.SYS, IFSHLP.SYS, & COMMAND.COM. Can anyone help me with this? I can swap the cd rom out with another cd rom, but there's files on the old one that I need to retreive. How do I do that?

yes you can do that, but i think your Win98 install is dead, it would be easier to just reinstall 98 over the top of itself, some programs will probably need reinstalling too (to readd the registy settings

When I try to reload Windows 98, it gets as far as the files & quits. I'm going to just swap out the old cd rom with a new one, but I need to know how to retrieve the files off the old cd rom. I'm going to leave the old one in the pc, so it will be easier to retrieve old files.

it may be the 98 install CD is not working (but you are right to check the old CD drive too) try copying the contents of D:\Win98 (assuming D: is your CD drive) to C:\Windows\Install and try installing from there also you will have the 98 install on HDD, so you will never need to prompted to insert the 98 CD again)

I'm sorry, I meant the hard drive. How can I retrieve the documents she wants from the old HD to the new one when it is "dead"? I left the old hd in the pc so it would be easier to transfer the documents.
