illegal operation message
I receive this message every time I open Word, Excel, or any other program. As soon as I hit ok, the program ends.
Any idea what is causing this? Last edited by arkansascookie; 11-01-2006 at 06:44 PM. |

The most common cause of this error is when one application tries to access memory of another application.
This may be because of some corrupt DLL or corrupt Office itself. Try repairing or even better, re-installing your office installation. Which other software are giving this error?

Well, I think you have got your answer right in front of you. You can run a detailed scan of your disc so that scandisc mark those bad sectors as non-usable and use rest of your hard disc but frankly speaking, I am not sure about the positives and feasibility of this approach in long run.
I would suggest you to get your disc replaced as that would be best.

ScanDisk has identified the bad sectors and marked them off. It still does this.
Since this is such an old machine does it make more sense to buy new with the software installed that I would need, or replace the hard drive? |

New Machine or not
Frankly speaking, it has to be totally your decision on whether to just buy a new hard disc or to invest in a new machine altogether. The only suggestion i can give here is to look at the software you are running on your machine and answer these questions to see whether you need a new machine or not.
Are you satisfied with the performance of your machine with respect to the software you are running? If you have a faster machine, will you be able to utilize it more by using different software? Are you using any of the 16 bit DOS sofware as they will fail miserably on XP machines? One more possibility is to buy a hard disc now and later on, when you are buying a new PC, use this hard disc there. Cheers Dheeraj

If you change hard drives you better keep the one that came out of your machine. Microsoft hides everypale you've been and if there's sensitive material like your ssn or credit card purchases they are on your hard dive and I coul retrieve every place you've been. Don't beleive me! Boot you manchine into DOS not ms-dos and type the following:CD\WINDOWS
TEMPOR~1\CONTENT.IE5 hit enter then type EDIT /75.INDEX.DAT. You be taken to a blue screen with a bunch of binary thenhold down the page down key and look at what's there. |
