SMTP server name error message

I am using Win98 and Outlook 2000. I have an e-mail address at optonline.net. All of the e-mail I get from there is downloaded automatically to my desktop via Outlook 2000. When I try to send e-mail from Outlook, I get an error message that says " The SMTP server name could not be found. Please check name and try again". I am positive the server name is

mail.optonline.net

I cannot figure out why I cannot send mail directly from Outlook. If I go to the optonline.net website, I do not have any problems sending my mail. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks so much for any advice.

mail.optonline.net may be fine for the incoming but try putting this in the outgoing

smtp.optonline.net

I tried your suggestion and that did not work either. Is it possible that I may need to reinstall Outlook? We use it as an inter office post office, and I would hate to lose any of the current settings. At least that works. Thanks again.

Contact your ISP and have them go over your settings with you. I wouldnt resort to te reinsallation just yet.
Did you try placing mail.optonline.net in the outgoing and incoming box? Did you try mail.optonline.net in the incoming and smtp.optonline.net in the outgoing?

I tried all of your suggestions. Optonline.net service rep was no help. Guess I will need to send mail by logging on to the net before I send it. I can just send it from their website. Thanks for trying.

I apologize as I was thinking they were your ISP, you may not have the option to send from Outlook without it being POP3, but Im not understanding how you could recieve ....doesnt make sense

I have optonline.net as my broadband connection at home. It is thru them that I have an e-mail address. On my office computer, someone noticed that I was using Outlook, and said they could set it up to automatically get my mail from the optonline.net server. That was working great for about 6 months, as I used AOL for outgoing mail. Now that I am cancelling AOL, I tried to send mail via Outlook, with no sucess, as per my previous postings. I need to go to the optonline.net website to send outgoing mail, which is obviously an inconvenience. Since we also use Outlook as an intercompany postoffice located on my computer, I am hesitant to reinstall it, since I do not want to lose all of my current settings. I don't know what would happen if I click on the option to repair it. Would that change any of the settings? At this point, I don't know how to proceed. Thanks for any additional suggestions.

My System

Reinstalling Outlook will not fix the problem IMO.

Perhaps try ticking the box in the account properties - server settings 'My server requires authentication' (or something similar to that)

Also, check that your Anti-Virus or Firewall isn't blocking the port..if you have email scanning enabled, disable it and try again..also temporarily disable the firewall just to check but remember to re-enable it afterwards!! :)

If that lot doesn't help, delete the account and recreate it making sure all the details are correct :)
