I have a corupted copy of ie5 on my ME system. I downloaded both ie5sp2 setup and ie6 setup. Have been unable to install either program over my ie5.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Was this a fresh installation of Windows ME? Have you removed IE5 in Add/Remove Programs and then try to install IE6? Are you recieving any error message?

Up to a month ago my system was ME with ie6. Through some stupid mistake, somehow ie5 overwrote ie6. It also disabled my restore. I deleted ie5 in add/remove and in folders that had programs that looked like ie5. That's where I am.
ie6setup tries to download ie6 but won't complete the installation. I was told that you have to install ie5SP2 over ie5. Then ie6 will install over ie5SP2. Won't work.

This all may be moot as MS will soon no longer be supporting the ME system. Planned obsolescence.

In the meantime I am using Firefox.

You want me to bare my soul. ok. I pressed an icon on my desktop that I thought was Norton but didn't recognize. I got a dialog box that said it was going to reinstall my browser. Stupidity...I pressed ok. The downloading commenced and continued. Stupidity...I didn"t shut down the computer when I started to panic. The download completed and I was now the proud owner of an ie5 browser. I tried sys restore but previous restore points were deleted.
I have no idea how that icon got on my desktop.
I have since run my anti-virus and adaware but have found nothing.

Try a Repair Install. With the system booted up, place your Windows ME cd in the cd drive, let it install overtop the existing O.S.
You should not lose personal info or settings

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I believe I would be installing a 5 year old version of ME with no udates or potential for future updates. I would rather try to obtain a copy of 2000 and install that. Is that feasible?
Question: If I do install ME from the disk, will that restore my ie6?

No, Windows ME includes IE5.5, but if there are system files missing/corrupt, thus causing your inability to update to IE6, these will be addressed in the Repair Install proceedure.
