Question CD-ROM problems

Hello ev1,
I reformatted my hard drive on this old IBM Aptiva 2168 and got help from you guys when I did. Anyway, you all suggested I get the start-up disk for 95 and I was fortunate enough to find the set on e-bay. They worked fine but now I can't get the CD player to work so I can upgrade to 98 or XP. The device manager says the device is working properly but when i try to use it an error comes up "Device is not ready". Can someone tell me what to do now? Thanks a lot.

Are you positive the cd rom is still in working condition. Have you replaced it with another one to see if the issue is still present?

Oh yeah, the CD player I replaced won't play music. It says the mmsystem 281 driver is missing. Can you tell me how to fix this? I've looked all over the place for that driver and can't find a free download.
thanks

My System

Follow the instructions here to upgrade from 95 to 98 2nd edition.

OSR2 Caution:

Please think carefully if you are upgrading from Windows 95 or 95A to Windows 95B (OSR2). The OSR2 never had an upgrade version and was designed to be sold only with new computers.

The Upgrade #1 fix below could work with OSR2 but it's quite risky! Try with OSR2 entirely at your own risk.
