you can read here. things might be is slightly different places for win98, but i think they are very similar and shouldn't be a problem to setup.

....thanks.....I printed out what you said in your other posting........That is exactly what I did, but I will follow your directions too....just to double check......I could ping the XP from 98....but couldn't ping 98 from XP. I could see the 98 PC in work group on XP machine, but couldn't see XP machine in network places on 98....real weird........I'm using x-over cable, IP: 164.254.0.2 & 255.255.0.0 for XP........164.254.0.3 & 255.255.0.0 for 98...it's crazy!!!!!

i don't think this will make any difference, but try setting the IPs and subnets to
192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 and obviously set the last number of the other IP address to something other than 2,0 and 255. while they are on the same subnet it looks like it should work, but i was always told to use the 192.168.0.xxx address range. there is more than likely something else the causing the problem. have you installed 'file and printer' sharing on the win98 pc. also share some folder on each pc to see if that'll let you get anywhere. disable internet security (for the moment) if any is running to see if that is causing the problem.

...yeah, I used the XP CD to install the "file & Printer sharing", etc.....
Doing this for a living, this has me baffled. I can "see" the 98 machine on the XP box and then when I go to get into the 98 machine an error message pops up saying I don't have rights to access it, see an administrator! HA! I can't ping the 98 machine from XP Box but I can "see" it in network places/view workgroups...98 machine can ping XP Box, but won't or doesn't see it in "My Network places".... You know, 98% of the time, you connect this little peer-to-peer workgroup and "BAM!", it takes right off.....but the 2% of the time....well.....you know---Murphy's Law! Anyway, thanks for all your help.....GOD bless and if you think of anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know! ...in "HIM!" <>< smeadows00 |

are you sure it's a crossover cable? is the cable working properly?
stop antivirus/internet security on both pcs and disable the firewall on XP. although 98 should be able to see XP even with firewall enabled.

...I have performed all the actions you have mentioned....the EU just purchased a copy of XP Home for this 98 machine, so maybe it'll wind up a different story! Thanks for all your help!
