Windows won't come up... need help bad!

Hello everyone!

This problem is on a gateway essential running Windows ME. When I turn it on, it comes to the windows ME splash screen and just stays there. I'm getting noise from the hard drive confirming that its booting up and everything.. then I get the infamous blue screen of death... which says:

-While initializing device CONFIGMG -

Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

System halted.

Then I restart the computer, and it does the same thing, over and over and over. Any suggestions would be welcome and greatly appreciated. Thank you again!!!

My first thought on this is an old windows 95 trick.

Press F8 during start up and select safe mode.
Allow the system to complete the safe mode boot up and when the dust has settled and the hard drive has stopped. Then restart the system normally.

I booted in safe mode, and I can get windows to come up in Safe Mode.. but when I reboot it does the same thing.

I tried to reset the bios settings like someone said in a past thread I searched in, and evidently in my BIOS menu there's no place to do that.

Also, they said something about the advanced power options in the device manager, and I can't find that on my device manager either.

I'm really stumped on what to do.. keep the suggestions coming, please.. I really appreciate it :)

Most probably you are referring to Err Msg: While Initializing Device CONFIGMG: Windows...

Because the BIOS settings mentioned in above page are system-specific, please provide the specs of your pc (motherboard type, bios version, etc)

I'm not exactly sure about the specific specs on it. It's an older model Gateway "Essentials" 700... made back in the year 2000. Is there a certain page on Gateways website that I can look at to see if it's on there?

well, i was at a loss as to what to do to fix it, so I ended up formatting the hard drive and doing a fresh install of windows ME. It runs great now.

I still think I will have to (at some point) get a new hard drive for it, because this computer was dropped about 3 months ago.. and at times the hard drive makes a crazy noise. any suggestions?

Thanks for all that looked at this!

Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.. This will test the integrity of the hard drive.

Open the side of the case and look inside, you may spot something out of the ordinary.

k so within 2 weeks of formatting and starting over it has started to do it again. And the hard drive is making a very weird noise. I'm beginning to think I need a new hard drive. What is the mind of the group? Thank you.

My System

It seems be a hardrive problem so I agree with Geekgirl, run the manufucturers Diagnostic utility.
