Reinstall ME

Can anyone help me with step by step directions to completly reinstall Windows ME and start over from scratch as if it was the first day I got the computer. I have a Dell Dimension 8100, with Pentium 4 and obviously Windows ME as my operating system. I would greatly appreciate thourough instructions on how to do this including debugging...etc

Thanks much
Ryan

Errr no I do not advise clean installing any system unless you really do know what your doing.

Now the good news. Check with the Dell web site they set their systems up with a system restore feature which resets the machine to its factory state.

Your Dell 8100 may have come with a set of several CDs. Do you still have these? I believe the 8100 series included an Operating System disk (in your case, the Windows Me CD). If you have one of these, you have the option to erase the drive, and perform a clean install. For this type of procedure, you'll have to do things yourself, step-by-step -- the links provided by nickster can help you with that.

You also may have a CD that can perform a "Recovery" or "Restore". Some Recovery CD sets will do all the work for you - they can wipe the drive, and restore a disk-image of the hard drive that is the same as the day it came home from the store: Windows, all the necessary drivers and devices, all the bundled software = is all there, installed and ready to go when you're done. Dell has very good, and quite detailed, instructions for most of these procedures on their site. To be sure you are getting the exact procedure for your model, simply visit their support site (you can start at dell.com and click on support), and enter your Service Tag number (or model number) & the information you need is easily found.

If you do things manually, you may find it helpful to download the Dell-specific drivers from their "drivers & downloads" webpages ahead of time.

Best of luck
. . . Gary
