There are a lot of users who install a fresh installation of Windows 98 in their pc.
However, when they attempt to update their newly-installed OS at the Windows Update site, they receive Windows update error (0x80072F89). This error is not documented either in the Windows update knowledge base or faq. However, the cause for this error is extremely basic; it has to do with the IE version that is included in the Win98 & Win98SE installation discs (IE5). Workaround In Internet Options, click the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security heading. The box next to "Check for server certificater revocation (requires restart)" has to be unchecked. If it is checked, uncheck it and click Apply (in this case you'll have to restart the system). If it is unchecked, do nothing. Press OK. Then go to www.microsoft.com, navigate to downloads, and upgrade to IE 6sp1. Follow the instructions till completion of the download. That's it! Now you can go to the Windows update and everything will work fine... |
