My preferred option for a clean install is to boot with a Windows 98 "boot floppy", run FDISK and remove all partitions. Then, with an unpartitioned drive, boot with the XP CD and let it partition and format the drive and install the operating system.

You are much better to "clean install" XP than to upgrade an existing Windows installation.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do:

- install XP?
- clean install 98?
- reinstall 98 over the existing copy?

Also, what state is your hard drive now in:

- unpartitioned?
- partitioned but not formatted?
- partitioned and formatted?
- a version of Windows partly installed?
- a version of Windows installed but damaged?

Unless you have data on the drive that must be preserved, to install Windows 98, boot with a Windows 98 "boot floppy" and at the A:\> prompt, type format c: and press Enter. When this completes, and with the Windows CD in the drive, type setup and press Enter. Windows should then install.

Note that when booting with the Windows 98 boot floppy, you should select the option to boot with CD ROM support.
