computer too new for 98?

I seem to be having a problem booting an old windows 98 OS on a harddrive i installed on a brand spanking new pentium D system with 2G of RAM.

EVery time it tries to load it comes up with the 98 splash screen and then has an error message saying I dont have enough memory, please consider closing autoexec.bat.. and some other weird stuff. Considering there is 2G in there i wouldnt think it would be a problem

It was for my dad who has recently upgraded but needs to run some of the programs from his old system until he can get new copies of his software to install.

you need to reinstall it on top of itself as it is looking for the old motherboard,if you do a fresh install you will lose everything
the ram will also cause a problem over 500mg
it would be easier to slave the drive and copy the required data across
