Windows protected error

I am trying to update an old Hitachi laptop from Windows 95 to 98. The Windows 98 CD I have is the full version so I used fdisk to clear the hard drive before installing 98. After the install during the initial Windows 98 startup it would show the Windows 98 window then reach a point where the screen would show a scattered color display with some areas binking with letters, numbers and some other symbols; then freeze. When I restarted in safe mode it would get to that same point then give me the message "While initializing device VFBACKUP: Windows protected error. You need to restart your computer."

Any help would be appeciated.

My System

I Google searched and found several references to VFBACKUP, but all were 95 related.

Yes, I came across that same information. I am going to see if anything there will help me. So far I found the VFD.VXD file on the hard drive but I am having a hard time finding it on the 98 install CD. Thanks for trying to help.
