End of support for Windows 98 & Windows Me
July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.
Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site. This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service. More info.....

windows98se micros help
hi geek girl, it really doesnt matter to me and ill tell you why... i have spent over 15 hrs on the phone with people in india to solve a small issue. 15 hrs later my problem has not been resolved, but not for my lack of trying. They used me to rename files and reinstall using cab files. they never asked me if win 95 was going to be the default cab files. 4 reinstalls later they told me i would have to do a clean boot install. when i told them i would need help they referred me to the "tech team" they basically were there to scare and convince me that it was a big deal and very messy and i might think about just getting a new computer.
i started reading on my own and changed registries. (the only one (started in there) and then did a over the top install of win98se. it is skipping along nicely now thank you, but i still have this nasty ie explorer issue. could you kindly go down and read my post and offer me some assistance? i am at the point now where i would like to purge my registry of every internet explorer reference and reinstall a new copy of ie6. How can i do this? Any help would be appreciated. |

Geekgirl, thanks a lot for bringing the MS announcement to our attention.
My question is if the redistributable updates for Win98SE will remain available in the MS site (I couldn't figure it out from the linked page). You see, we have a number of older machines running on Win98SE, and they're doing just fine (we've kept 98 as their OS, simply because it's doing what it's supposed to do - namely, to provide a stable OS for old pc's that run sufficiently the simple applications they're supposed to run). What's the best practice for gathering all the necessary updates that are issued till July 11th (so that we have them handy in cases of OS recovery / re-installation)?

Just read the post,,thanks Geekgirl! That explains why 98 will not update
for me. Is there anywhere on MS's site that will allow me to d/l all updates, sp's etc. Up until 7/11/06. This kind of blind sided me, I just fixed a kids computer on the block, freebie, figured I would reinstall 98 on his compaq. It would be nice to get it at least as current as possible. If I can find such a download I will backup on cd, as I still work on alot of poor folks comps that cant afford xp right now. Thank You!

A related question:
Once all these are downloaded, what order should they be installed in? Some have dates, some don't. Is there a list somewhere? There are more updates lited here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...DisplayLang=en Thank you, Dave
