Exclamation Help with Mprexe error in Win Me

Help. I am working on a friends computer which got infected with trojan virus. I have gone into safe mode and run scandisk, adware and AVG free which is updated until when the virus first turned up. I cannot get a brand new update as it will not connect to the internet.

When I log into Win ME normally it comes up with the following error: MPREXE has caused and error in KERNEL32.DLL. MPREXE will now close. If I click close to this the whole system locks up and I can't do a thing. They have lost their Windows ME cd so I don't have anything to reload from.

What is the best way to resolve this as I am stumped!

The PC is a P2 400 Mhz PC. I can't find any unusual programs in Add / Remove programs and AVG is no longer picking up a virus but I can't get around this. Any Ideas?

The best thing for you to do is follow the First Steps at Removing the Malware and Posting your HJT Log the best you can. If you cannot do any of the scanning at least post your HJT Log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum.

(Download and install: HiJackThis.

(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders or Desktop. A good place to make a folder would be in My Documents, as this is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)

Then doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Do A System Scan And Save Log". Make sure all Windows and Browsers are closed.
When the scan is finished, best to save your text file in the same folder as where you put HiJackthis.


IMPORTANT!!!
Create a New Topic and include a fresh HJT log in the HiJackThisLog Help Forum and Copy/Paste the info from your saved Hijackthis log file into your new topic.

A Moderator/ Security Team Analyst will give you instructions.

Thanks. I can't get into the first step for removing malware page as it comes up with a Error 404 and then returns me to the main screen of techsupportforum.

I will try and download the hijackthis but I don't know how easy it is going to be to get this on the other computer.
