Word xp opens extremely slowely

I have a customer running Word XP student package on a machine with 256mb Ram and XP home. When trying to open Word it takes ages to open and often leaves a blank portion on the screen. It is difficult to close and requires a reset. Machine has Norton Antivirus 2005 on it. Any help would be appreciated.

2 things to try -- First, apply the latest Office service pack. If that doesn't work, uninstall Word and reinstall.

Get more ram. Seriously.
I had 512MB of ram and my office apps opened slow. I had too many processes running. I upped to 1.6 gigs of ram and you wouldnt believe the speed it opens and closes..
