Office 2007 compatibility with older versions

I am having an issue where Office 2007 will not double click to open older files with a doc...xls... extension.

I can double click any older doc file and Word will open but the document doesn't. When Word opens, it doesn't have 'compatibility mode' at the top. I can open Word then drill down to open the file that way and it works fine. I can run a repair on office and it will fix the issue temporarily.

Windows XP SP3
Office 2007 Pro Plus

If you have saved over these files using Office 2007 without providing that the file should be set to a 97-2003 format, you won't get compatibility mode.

Now, as far as if it is not loading the document, have you given it a minute or two to load? Is there any errors reported when loading?

Any information would help.
