Outlook 2007 takes ages to open

We have a machine running Outlook 2007 which takes at least 3 or 4 minutes for Outlook to open up. During that time the CPU usage sits around 50%. After it opens, all works fine. In processes, outlook.exe sits around 350,000K which is pretty big, I beleive.
The computer is a year old laptop, with 3 Gb ram and good spec, it's not an overworked machine. Windows XP, all updates ok.
This only began recently, it worked fine for about a year.
One other point is that the user says it gives a message referring to Exchange Server. (I don't have the exact message but hope to get that over the next few days). This computer does not, never has, been connected to any E/S, and the email accounts are all pop3 type. I checked all the settings last night, nothing wrong there that I can see.
Have done all the usual virus and malware scans - Eset ESS, Spybot, Malwarebytes - all come up clear.
There are no other apparent problems with this machine - just that Outlook takes ages to open up.
If anyone has any ideas what could be causing this, I'd be grateful.

Hi Clyde...

Can you pls. locate this's users .pst file, how big it is? This can be an issue. Also, I found a patch for this issue and might work. You can have this User's Mailbox cleaned out asap, it will help the performance.
