Highlight + just about anything doesn't work

I have a new (6 wks) Dell that died last week just before I left for an extended trip. After reinstalling Windows and reverting everything to factory settings, I find that MS Word has many problems.

While I can highlight text, once it's highlighted, I usually can't do anything with it. Backspace does not delete highlighted text. Delete has worked once or twice but does not work regularly. Copy and Paste of highlighted text do not work either.

I've tried going into options and toggling typing replaces text. It was already selected. Deselecting and reselecting allowed me to do one highlight/delete and now that's not working again. I tried toggling "insert" options as well, to no avail.

I am working with a trial version of Windows since I 'm not at home and do not have access to the code I need to reregister it after the OS reinstall.

I've got a lot of work piling up and am getting a bit desperate. Any advice?

Hi,
Have you tried to run the repair facility within Word? Are you working with 2007 or an earlier version?
