Word docs saved with a ~ sign

I have an end user who opens a word doc created in word 2003, using word 2007, she makes amendments then saves as word 2003 and alters the name of the file so that the orginal is not overwritten.

The next time she goes to open the new saved file it is not there. Looking in her Recent Documents, the name of the file has a ~on the front, and when she clicks on this, the browse for missing document appears.

Not only this but the original doc has also dissapeard. He-lp!

Re: Word docs saved with a ~ sign

Hi Leedouglas,

Is the end user opening the document directly from an email attachment? If so, tell her not to - and to save the attachment to an appropriate folder before opening it.

Nope I have checked for that. More info. It seems that this user is in the habit of saving every ten mins or so. She does so with a slight change to the file name, and then carries on working on the document. It is after she closes and then tries to re-open the doc that the problem occours.

Re: Word docs saved with a ~ sign

Why on earth would one save every 10 mins with a different filename?! Hasn't this user discovered Word's 'save autorecover info' feature, which can make a backup just in case everything goes pear-shaped, as often as every minute? or the 'always create backup copy' feature? Both are under Tools|Options|Save.

Presumably, all these saves are via File|Save As. How is she trying to open the file - via Windows Explorer or the Word File|Open menu? Which version is she having trouble finding - the most recent save, or one of the others? And is she being careful about where she's saving them too (does she even know)?
