Creating Page Numbers in Different Sections in Word
I have a long Word document, divided into sections. I would like to have
page numbers for each section so that the first few pages of section one has the numbers 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc., and the first few pages of section 2 would go 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, etc. I'm trying to get this number sequence by doing the following in Word: I click in a section where I want to start renumbering, click on the Insert menu, click Page Number, click Format, and in the Start Box I enter the number "1". I'm also clicking on "Include Chapter Number" because I want the page numbers to look like 1-1, 2-1, etc. When I click on OK, Word then tells me that "there is no chapter number to include in the caption or page number. To apply chapter numbers use the Bullets and Numbering Command on the Format menu and select a multilevel list style that is linked to the Heading styles." Word's help file tells me to do the following: 1. Use the Bullets and Numbering dialog box to format your chapter titles with a built-in heading style (heading style: Formatting applied to a heading. Microsoft Word has nine different built-in styles: Heading 1 through Heading 9.). A. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering, and then click the Outline Numbered tab. B. Click a chapter-numbering style (one that includes the text "Heading 1," "Heading 2," and so on), and then click OK. C. If you are creating a new heading, type the text you want for the numbered heading, and then press ENTER. D. To add the next numbered heading, go to the next chapter heading, click the arrow next to the Style box on the Formatting toolbar, and then select the heading style you specified in step 2. 2. If your document is divided into sections (section: A portion of a document in which you set certain page formatting options. You create a new section when you want to change such properties as line numbering, number of columns, or headers and footers.), click in a section or select multiple sections in which you want to include chapter numbers along with page numbers. 3. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers. 4. Click Format. 5. Select the Include chapter number check box. 6. In the Chapter starts with style box, click the heading style applied to the chapter titles. 7. In the Use separator box, click the character that you want to separate the chapter number from the page number. So, I went to the Format/Bullet and Numbering menu and I click on the "Outline Numbered" tab. I think I'm supposed to click on one of the choices that has the word "Heading" in it. This is where I run into difficulties. Clicking on one of those choices adds a number (like 2.1) in front of all my section's subheaders. It also adds a number (like 2) in front of my section heading. It also adds these kinds of numbers to my table of contents, next to each of the sections and subsections listed in the table of contents. It does produce the page numbers I'm looking for at the bottom of the page (like 1-2, or 2-1, etc). But I could really do without the addition of these numbers next to my section and subsection names in the body of the document. For example, this is how one of my pages is looking now: 2.1 Welcome to Our Center Welcome to the Center for Creative Growth. We are ...... 2.2 Our Purpose The Center for Creative Growth (CCG) is a California non-profit educational and charitable 501(c)(3) organization...... 2.3 Introduction to Our Clinical Supervisory Team We have four licensed staff members at CCG, all of whom compose our Clinical Supervisory Team...... I'd rather have the page look like this: Welcome to Our Center Welcome to the Center for Creative Growth. We are ...... Our Purpose The Center for Creative Growth (CCG) is a California non-profit educational and charitable 501(c)(3) organization...... Introduction to Our Clinical Supervisory Team We have four licensed staff members at CCG, all of whom compose our Clinical Supervisory Team...... Is it possible to create the look I'm wanting, and still keep the page numbers on the bottom looking the way I'd like (1-2, 2-3, etc.)? I'd really appreciate any assistance on this! Thanks much. .....Jason ************************ E-mail addy deleted to prevent spam. Last edited by Horse; 02-07-2005 at 01:09 AM. |
