opening .doc attachments with Word 2007

I am running Win XP sp3 and using Outlook Express for email.
I have just installed Office 2007 home and student, having previously been using Works 6.0 for word processing. Now when I try to open a Word document attachment from an email Works still opens it as a .wps document. How can I get Word 2007 to open these attachments by default? I have Word set as my default text editor. I'm not overly computer literate and cannot find guidance on any help file.

Re: opening .doc attachments with Word 2007

This advice is for Vista, but it's more or less the same for XP (some of the names may be slightly different, but the process is the same).

Go to control panel and set it to classic view. Find default programs (or something similar) and then "associate a file type or protocol with a program". In this section, find .doc (and anything else you want to open in word by default) and click "change program".Find word in this list, and click OK.

Second method: command prompt. Open a command prompt (Start->Accessories->Command Prompt, or Start->Run->cmd) and type
Code:
assoc .doc=word.document
You need to be an administrator to do this.

Hope I've helped!
