Problems with starting Powerpoint

Relevant software specs: Running Vista SP1. Problem is with Microsoft Office 2007, Enterprise edition.

Recently, Powerpoint has ceased to function. Every time I click on a Powerpoint file, an error message appears declaring "The volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid." If I click on the .exe, it tells me no program is associated for performing this action, although Vista still lists Powerpoint as the default file for opening .ppt files. The message appeared shortly after I defragmented my hard drive.

What I've tried so far:

- Completely uninstalling Office, then reinstalling, removing all install elements using Windows Install Cleaner
- Running antivirus sweeps with both Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor (both turned up nothing)

The files themselves don't appear to be corrupt, as they work fine on other systems with Powerpoint installed. At this point, I'm at my wit's end and would appreciate any help I can get. Microsoft has virtually nothing on this error in any of their tech support pages.

Re: Problems with starting Powerpoint

Can you open the default PP program, without a file? (Like when starting a new presentation?)

I cannot. When I open the .exe, it says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel." When I check, Powerpoint is the associated program for .ppt files.
